Soon You’ll Be Able to Add Contacts on WhatsApp Via QR Codes

Don't want to share your number on WhatsApp? Well, soon WhatsApp will make sure you won’t have to. WhatsApp’s latest beta version lets you add contacts by scanning their QR codes, WABetaInfo reports. The feature, which is available in beta on both iOS and Android, can be found in the app’s settings menu, where there are options to display your own code, as well as to scan other people’s. A QR code can also be revoked if you accidentally share the code with someone who you do not want to share your number with. And you can do this an unlimited number of times. It’s a minor feature, but it will be a blessing for many people for whom adding contacts on WhatsApp was a pain. QR codes are a much more convenient way of adding someone if you’re with them in person, although it won’t make the process too much easier if you’re doing it online. Although the feature is currently available in beta, there’s no word on when we might see it come to the main app.

Despite this feature making adding contacts on WhatsApp a lot easier, there’s a downside to this. Some miscreants can capture the QR code and share it online, though testers reckon that and have said WhatsApp will include an option whereby the setting can be revoked. But it does not address existing issues such as dealing with spam messages from people who are not on your contact list.
